10 screen free ways to unwind before bedtime

We are self-proclaimed bedtime Queens, so we are sharing 10 of our favorite ways to unwind with the family before bedtime.

  1. Dim the lights in your environment and create a peaceful atmosphere conducive to sleep. We've even changed out the lightbulbs in our "chill room" and have lamps in our sleeping areas that have warmer lights instead of daytime light bulbs.

  2. Make a sleepy time tea and enjoy it together. We love a warm drink before bedtime, it's just so relaxing to your tummy. Try our favorite bedtime tea recipe. (see video below)

  3. Listen to a relaxing bedtime podcast. We may be slightly biased, but we think the "Say Goodnight" podcast is a great way to relax and unwind before falling asleep. Calming conversations, poems and songs set the tone for a great night's rest.

  4. Read poems or stories. Getting lost in a good story is a great way to wind down before bedtime. The act of reading in a quiet and dimly lit space can create a soothing environment that supports restful sleep. For us reading together is a comforting and familiar activity that evokes a sense of security and ease, helping us feel safe and relaxed as we head to bed.

  5. Journal. One of our favorite journal prompts is to write about one thing we are grateful for from the day. It's a great way to reflect and remember there is always something to be thankful for, even on the wildest of days.

6. Listen to relaxing bedtime music. Since Cori was an itty-bitty baby, she's always loved music to help her fall asleep. She particularly loved old school R&B and Lofi Hip Hop Beats. ha-ha, I'm sure her parents had something to do with that love. Thats what inspired me to begin writing the songs for our bedtime EP Lofi and Lullabies, a great album to help you fall asleep.

7. Color together. It's no secret that Cori and I love to craft! We share fun crafts all the time and that doesn't have to end just because it's bedtime. Coloring provides a constructive way to shift your attention away from any troubling thoughts or anxieties that might keep you awake at night. Our favorite coloring book to color is the Lofi and Lullabies coloring book.

8. Stretch. While we listen to our relaxing music, we often like to stretch our bodies. We get out all the rest of our movement for the day and release any tension our bodies may be holding. Gentle stretching can have a soothing effect, promoting a sense of calm and relaxation that can make it easier to transition into sleep.

9. Play a game. Yes, there are games other than video games and iPad apps! ha-ha! We like to play card games like uno or a board game like chutes and ladders. Many card and board games require strategic thinking, problem-solving, and planning, which can be mentally stimulating in a positive way. Engaging in such activities can keep your mind sharp.

10. Build Legos or a Puzzle. We love relaxing and doing things with our hands that stimulate our brains before going to bed. These activities require your full attention and engagement. We are able to let go of any worries or stress from the day while relaxing and enjoying the activity and time seems to pass quickly. It makes it easier to transition into a state of relaxation and rest. Grab some of our favorite Lego sets and puzzles here.
